The Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam is something special; Its foundation was a one man's initiative. In 1878, under the leadership of theologian and statesman Dr. Abraham Kuyper, orthodox Protestant Dutchman established an association whose goal was the foundation of a free Christian university; 'free' (vrije) here meaning independent of church or state, bound only by God's word.

The logo represents characteristics of scientific endeavour as well as of the Vrije Universiteit itself; rooted in reality, inquisitive, dynamic and subject to multiple interpretation. The vrije (free) aspect of the university is expressed in the design of the wings.
